2008 Carnival: From Scarecrows to Parades - A Fun-Packed Week Lies Ahead
Wednesday, 28 May 2008

ImageThe line-up is almost complete for the 2008 Wroughton Carnival that takes place on Saturday July 5th. On the day itself, the procession will be packed with many colourful and interesting floats and walking entrants too. We are grateful to everyone who has decided to take part.  We think the judges are going to have a tougher time than ever!

The Weir Field will be the venue for the afternoon and evening entertainment with stalls and shows put on by a variety of local entertainers. The evening musical line up is almost complete and Wroughton will be rocking once again before the evening comes to a close with the colourful firework display above the village skies.

Full details of the day’s entire programme will be posted on www.wroughtoncarnival.com and there will also be posters around the village too. Don’t forget – anyone who wishes to help out on this busy day can contact Paul Hurst on 01793 813985. Also, if you would like to donate towards carnival costs or get involved in sponsorship, please let us know. The greater the support, the more we can donate to local good causes and charities.

Anniversaries and Dedications
Monday, 19 May 2008
ImageThis month both the Anglican and Methodist churches in our village celebrate their birthdays. For the Methodist Church this is described as a celebration of the Church Anniversary while for the Anglicans it is called a Dedication Festival. Both mean that it is the birthday of the church building.

When church buildings are completed they are dedicated to the glory of God and to the service of their community. From then on that date is remembered (in most cases) from year to year. For the Methodist church that is usually on the second Sunday of June, for the Roman Catholics at St Joseph it is near the day when the church remembers St Joseph (19th March) while for the Anglicans it is on the Sunday nearest to St John the Baptist’s day (24th June). Why we do not celebrate as well on St Helen’s day on 18th August is a mystery to me!
